Chapter Eleven

22ND APRIL

This time I won’t fail.

Audrey sent me a text message yesterday asking me why I hadn’t stopped at her gate as I usually did. I replied telling her I’d been quite unwell after the Aya consumption.

I’m so sorry, Jack. She’d replied. I feel responsible. Can I get you anything? Bring you some shopping maybe?

I thought about this for a moment. Could I lure her into the house? Perhaps if I feigned some sort of sickness she might come inside to check on me. But what if she didn’t? What if she stood outside and called an ambulance? No, it was too risky. Besides, a passer-by might see her walking to my house.

Thank you for the offer but I’m getting much better. I’ll walk down to the gate about 2ish? It would be good to see you.

She wasn’t waiting with baked goods or speciality coffee today. She leaned on the wall wearing jeans and a long sleeve top. Both hugged her slight body. The curve of her breasts and hips brought out the dark thoughts in my head. I pushed them down and forced myself to concentrate on the words she spoke.

“How are you feeling?” she asked.

“Better,” I said. “Good, actually. Once the sickness subsided, I had some rather… strong thoughts about my life and who I am.”

“Me too,” she said. “Things became a lot clearer for me.”

I smiled. “I’m glad.”

“Yeah,” she said. “But I think there’s more I can delve into, you know?”

“Really?”

“Yeah. What about you?”

I nodded. “Absolutely.” I didn’t tell her about the dark pit that was my mind, or say a word about the deep, deep well of gloom. Instead, I thought carefully about how to play this. I had to get it right. “Would you like a change of scenery?”

“What do you mean?” she asked.

“Perhaps we could take the Aya in my garden? There are two gardens at my property. One has views over the area and some apple trees. It’s really rather lovely.”

“Oh,” she said. And then she shook her head. “No, that wouldn’t work. Sorry to be a pain. I’m grounded at home, you know? Sorry, is that selfish of me?”

“Not at all,” I said, thinking it was incredibly selfish of her. “Whatever makes you comfortable.”

She smiled. “You are such a gent, Jack. Why don’t we do it two days from now. I need a couple of days to relax first. Does that work for you?”

“Definitely.”

“Great!” She grinned.

I hurried home to tell you all about it, diary. Another opportunity to indulge in those dark desires I’ve spent all my life trying to quell. Finally, Audrey has made me realise that I don’t need to hate myself for the person I am. I feel no guilt at all about what I’m going to do to her. I have a second chance to have everything I want. This time I won’t fail. I can’t!
